Camping - July 2011

Ever since we had our first camping experience in the backyard we have been waiting for the perfect weekend to take the kids camping. We had a free weekend in July so we decided to take advantage of the lack of plans and take the kids camping. The weekend before we planned to take them to the campground we decided to break out the tent and have a test run in the basement. Mima and Papa decided to join in the fun! They all ate dinner and watched a movie together in the tent.

The next weekend, unfortunately Becca came down with an ear infection, so Mima and Papa thankfully stayed home with her while we took Ethan out to the woods in Maryland. He had a great time, and it was nice to have some quality time just with him. We cooked hot dogs over the campfire and roasted marshmallows to make s'mores. Ethan's favorite part was catching fireflies with Daddy and putting them into a bottle... they must have caught at least 20 or so.... He got very good at catching them all by himself by the time the evening was over. We were so proud that he did so well, even going to sleep by himself in the tent while we stayed up and enjoyed evening by the campfire. All in all, even though we missed Becca, it was a great first camping trip and a great experience to spend with Ethan.

Becca - 14 months - July 12th, 2011

Becca changes and grows so much every day. It's funny to think that we were so worried when she wasn't crawling at 10 months... even though she isn't walking yet there is nowhere that this little girl can't go.

She has become an expert at climbing up the stairs and has recently perfected coming down backwards all on her own. She likes to sneak up when no one's looking and when we find her midway up to the top, she just smiles and giggles like it's the best game ever. Along with climbing the stairs, if a laundry basket is left out, you can bet that she will be sitting up there as proud as can be if you turn your back on her for a second. She can now climb herself onto her Princess car and ride it around, she climbs herself onto Ethan's exercise giraffe bike and straddles it and pushes it around, but her favorite is Ethan's rocking horse. She climbs herself up there and just "rocks" out back and forth with a huge toothy smile on her cute little face.

And if there's somewhere she wants to get without crawling, there is no toy that she can't hold onto and push around the house to get wherever she wants to go. I know she'll be walking soon, but just like crawling, she will do it all in her own time. Ethan didn't take his first step until he was 16 months and she  doesn't seem to be in any rush. She can get wherever she wants, however she wants, and is perfectly happy.

She LOVES rocking out and dancing to any music that is within earshot. Her little head starts bobbing, her arms start waving and the feet start kicking. It is the cutest thing!

Along with her gross motor skills improving, her fine motor skills are getting better every day too. She enjoys finding one of the many balls in the house and starting up a rousing game of "roll the ball" with anyone that will play with her, for as long as anyone is willing to play with her. Stacking and sorting objects from one place to another is also a never ending source of fun and amusement.

In addition to improving all of her motor skills, it's great to see her starting to understand communication more and more. "Uh oh" is one of the first words she learned. She is more than happy to  let you know if anything in her line of sight happens to fall on the ground. Just follow the sound of "uh oh" and you will surely find something on the ground that shouldn't be there...  She can verbally say "thank you" and knows now what it means. A great game is that she will take a toy, give it to you and say "thank you" and then put her hand out to get it back and say "thank you" and then go back and forth like that, over and over. And when she's all done, she is very proud to tell you that she was a "good girl!" She says "mama", usually only when she's very upset, and can clearly say "dada", usually when she's very happy.... hmmm.... She has recently started saying "papa" and "up"... tonight she said "apple" for the very first time. She tries to say "brother" and "Ethan"... and even though those are a bit harder, those are her most expressive words as her big brother is the light of her life.

She has also starting becoming very proficient non verbal communication. She waves hi and bye. She blows kisses loves to play peek-a-boo. She can now sign "all done", "more", "please"... and just tonight she started signing "milk" and "eat".

Above anything else, talking on the phone is what she loves the most. If you dare to talk on the phone in her presence and don't give her an opportunity to put it up to her ear and say "hawo!" then you will definitely get to experience her temper.... it doesn't come out very often, but not letting her use the phone will definitely bring out her "sassy" side...

Becca is such a sweet and fun little girl. It is so much fun watching her develop and grow and interact with the world around her. The best part is watching the relationship grow between her and Ethan. You can just tell how much they love each other. Walking in on him giving her a spontaneous hug is my favorite part of being their mom.

4th of July, 2011

Since Ethan was born, we have always been in Arizona over the 4th of July weekend. Up until now, he was always too young and it was too hot to ever think about taking him to see fireworks while we were out there. This year, we spent the long weekend visiting Grandma in Florida. We ended up getting back in Virginia early on the morning of the 4th, so we were lucky enough (after some much needed rest in the morning) to be able to celebrate the 4th of July festivities here at home.

Our neighborhood held it's very first 4th of July celebration at the pool, so we decided we would go and check it out. The kids had a blast swimming and enjoying all of the snacks and at the end Ethan got his face painted. Please note that all Ethan wanted was a couple of little fireworks on his face.... instead he got transformed into a firework....

Once the party was over, we came back to the house where we had a traditional 4th of July meal of burgers, corn on the cob and watermelon. Meanwhile, I had snuck out and purchased some basic fireworks. Since Ethan had never seen fireworks before, I just got some sparklers, black snakes, a couple of cukoos and a tank, nothing too crazy that would scare him. He loved it all! The noisy ones were definitely NOT his favorite, but as soon as  we explained that he could just cover his ears, it was all good. The best part of the evening is that we were able to go out on our back deck and enjoy all of the local community firework shows since our house overlooks the entire area. It was great to be able to watch them all from the comfort of our own house without having to fight the traffic or crowds and we could all just go inside when it was all over. I'm glad that we got home in time after our trip to Florida to be able to enjoy the holiday here at home with our family and neighbors.

Florida Trip - June 30th - July 3rd, 2011

Over the long 4th of July weekend, we packed up the kids and made a 17 hour drive down to Tampa to visit Grandma. The kids did great on the trip. We left right after dinner, so they were only awake for a little while and we drove through the night while they slept. Once they woke up, we were already in Florida so they only had to tolerate being in the car for a short amount of time after that, which they did extremely well with movies, books and games, and each other to entertain. They are great little travelers!!

After we (Chris and I) recovered from the long drive, we spent the next day at the Tampa Aquarium. Ethan and Becca both loved all of the sea creatures, especially the big floor to ceiling shark tank.

There were lights on the floor and some great music so Becca had to get down and boogie!

The best part of the aquarium is that it had an outdoor play area with an area that was just perfect for Becca...

and an awesome splash area that was perfect for Ethan, complete with a Pirate Ship...

The kids aren't quite old enough to appreciate and fully enjoy the Orlando Disney experience, so we took them for a day at Sea World instead. Everyone had a great day!!

We took in a great Dolphin show...

Fed the sea lions...

Fed the sharks...

And topped off the day with the Shamu show!

We all miss having Grandma live so close but it was great to make a trip to see her and her house and get to enjoy the Florida sites with her.
